Ear Refinement surgery reshapes the ear, eliminating protruding ears in all age patients. Typically, ear refinement is done on children between the ages of four and fourteen when ears are done growing. Ear refinement surgery is also possible on adults; there are no added side effects or risks associated with performing ear surgery on an older patient.
During surgery, a small incision is made on the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. The cartilage is then bent and sculpted back towards the head to counteract the protrusion. In some cases, non-removable stitches may be used to help keep the shape. The extra skin is then removed and stitches are used to fold the cartilage back on itself to reshape the ear. There will be a small scar on the back of the ear that will naturally fade over time.
Following surgery, the patient’s head is wrapped in a bulky bandage to keep the area well protected and mold the ears. After a few days, the bulky bandage is replaced with a lighter one, much like a headband. These next few days are imperative to the healing process, it is important to follow your doctor’s orders and keep your ears out of harms way.
