Traditional liposuction is used for sculpting smaller amounts of fat from the body, particularly the tummy, thighs, abdomen, hips and buttocks. The best candidates for liposuction are those who have firm, taut skin that have pockets of excess fat in certain areas.
Age is not a strong factor but those who are older tend to have less elasticity in their skin and may not experience the same results as younger patients. Liposuction can be risky for those suffering from diabetes, heart or lung disease, poor circulation or those who have recently had surgery near the areas to be contoured. This permanent and localized elimination of fat deposits is one of the more common cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States.
In traditional liposuction, fat is removed using a blunt tube with one or more holes near the end. The tube is pushed then pulled through the layer of fat, breaking it up and then a high vacuum is applied to the tube, drawing out the fat.
Following the procedure, the patient wears a restraining gauze like a girdle when the liposuction has been in the abdomen or buttocks regions for a number of weeks following surgery which expedites recovery.
